LASC TEYTUM's GIFTS DRIVE

Each year, the Association of Washington Student Leaders holds a state-wide conference for student leaders.  This year, the conference is being held at Ike and Davis and schools from around the valley, including East Valley, are responsible for planning and running the event.  One of the most important parts of the event is the service project that all 1000-plus students participate in each year.  For the 2017 conference, our service project will be collecting items to benefit Teytum’s Gifts, which is an organization dedicated to helping children transition into foster care.

To prepare for the service project, each participating high school in the Yakima area has committed to collecting items or raising money to purchase items to fill the backpacks that are then donated to the children entering the foster care system. Below are some pictures from Selah and East Valley currently collecting donations.

The Problem

Children entering foster care for the first time often feel scared, displaced and lonely.

Scared

Imagine a stranger taking you from your home. Imagine being placed with a family that is completely unknown to you. Imagine wondering if these people are safe, loving, caring or if they will treat you poorly. And before you are even placed into a home, imagine waiting HOURS in a office while a social worker works to find a suitable home for you. That is a pretty scary proposition; especially for young children. This is the plight of kids entering the foster care system.

Displaced

Imagine not owning a single thing. Imagine not being around anything that is familiar; not having anything that you can call your own. Imagine being taken away from all that you know and love. When a child is taken from their home, they often don't understand why. They are displaced. They lose their sense of identity and their life is disoriented.

Things aren't as they should be.

lonely

Imagine being taken from your parents and being ripped away from your home. Despite the fact there are good and valid reasons for a child to be removed from their home, the child doesn't always understand. To them they are being taken away from their parents, from the people they love. This is a lonely time. Even if they have fantastic foster care parents, you can imagine how lonely it must feel, especially as they are entering the foster care system for the first time.

YOU CAN HELP

Even the smallest measure of kindness can make a lasting impact.

YOU CAN HELP

Even the smallest measure of kindness can make a lasting impact.

The notion of Teytum’s Gift is a simple one.  We aim to partner with churches, businesses, organizations and individuals to provide a spark of hope into the seemingly hopeless situation that a child experiences while being placed into a foster home.

We will do this by providing a backpack that contains items that will help the child cope with the waiting and the transition. We partner with Yakima, Toppenish, Sunnyside, Ellensburg, and Goldendale's Department of Social and Health Services to distribute these gift boxes to kids in need.

The child will take the backpack and carry it with them to their new placement.  Since many children enter their new foster homes with little or no belongings, the idea is to send these children on with something of their very own in order to give them a sense of hope and comfort. This seemingly small gift has the potential of making a lasting impact.

Here are a few ways you can get involved
